Gentle but steady rain did not deter Tropiflora of Sarasota from showcasing a large variety of their exotic plants on the beautiful banks of Lake Mirror, Lakeland on Saturday, February 28.

Through the gracious hosting of Hollis Garden of Lakeland, Plantae Exoticus offered Lakeland residents Rhipsalis, Bromeliads, Dischidia and more.  The display was under a small tent, on the beautifully manicured lawns of Hollis Gardens.

The collection of umbrellaed residents was not deterred from leisurely milling about, deciding on purchases and discussing many topics with the very engaging staff of Tropiflora.  The plants were perfect!  Each purchaser was advised on very specific ways of caring for their plants – up to and including on how to manage their different stages of growth.  I left with several flowering air plants. Their inventory included drift wood which serves as a perfect staging item for most exotic plants.

Besides the inventory being available for sale, the staff had so beautifully displayed the plants that it was impossible to resist touching some of the most unusual fronds and leaves. It was as much a petting zoo as a shopping opportunity!

Visitors and customers were very gentle, respectful and very appreciative of how unique these plants are.

Owners Dennis and Linda Cathcart have been in this business since the 1970s.  Rooted in Dennis’s passion of all things bromeliad, this couple is Tropiflora.  The Cathcarts have traveled the world in search of plants and knowledge; taking them to over 25 countries in more than 100 trips. Their love of this business has allowed them to travel, speak, write, teach, explore and grow their passion. Their dedication has provided us all with one of the most unique housings of exotics to be found.  And to think, Tropiflora is a neighbor of Lakelands!

Did you miss today?  Or do you want more?  No worries!  The Cathcarts have scheduled Tropiflora’s 16th annual Spring Festival Open House and sale on Friday & Saturday, March 27 and 28th – 8am to 5pm and Sunday, March 29th – 10am to 3pm.  Their flyer promises
