Wednesday, December 19, was a remarkable day for Polk County as our beloved Polk Museum of Art installed a collection of work by renowned Japanese artist Michiko Fujii Fowler.

The Polk Museum of Art is the first museum in the U.S. to host an exhibition of her artwork.  Collections Manager Loren Plunkett, and Assistant Curator for Exhibitions & Design Matt Belcher, exhibited meticulous care in placing Fujii Fowler’s art for the best possible display and engagement.

From her website michikoart.com, Fujii Fowler shares “In my art, I seek to unite the real and the imaginary in an enhanced sensory experience.”  Her art provides an opportunity for guests to see and “sense more than we normally sense.”  Her work ranges from abstract images to a more recent fascination with using perspective and shading to surprise the mind.

Fujii Fowler heightens our view and experience through her original use of materials and depiction of space while creating art.  Posing questions not for the purpose of answers but instead as a means to engage, she enhances the complexity of visual art.  Exploring these expansive theories is an opportunity that can only be made available to us by an artist of the caliber of Fujii Fowler.

On behalf of the city of Lakeland, Lakeland Points welcomes Michiko Fujii Fowler and encourages our followers to attend her reception.  Lakeland Points reminds all of our followers that admission is always free to visitors thanks to our community’s benevolence (MIDFLORIDA; Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation; Reitzel Foundation; Southeastern University and Clayton & Beverly Hollis).

Come be intrigued and inspired by the “layered perception” of artist and visionary Michio Fujii Fowler.

“Matter Makes Space” December 19, 2015 – March 26, 2016.
